A new army book for the greenskins is being released in these days and I got mine a little early. Hurrah! Even better, I have had opportunities to try out the list in battle using an approximate version of the list based on the preview copy my Time for a review, I say! Contents

I've actually been running a fan project based around creating cathay for a long time now and through that I have corresponded for a while with some of the dev team on the list, essentially to see if they want to keep wraps on it in case any of the ideas contained within are used in an official variant. Apparently not, and it seems likely that we will not see cathay in the current known release period of 3-5 years. However, as GW do not wish to use the list we spent four years creating, they have given me the go-ahead for online publication, so if you want to play cathay, I'll have a fully playtested, themed, formatted, backgrounded army book up with all the bells and whistles Barring art the quality of GW's stuff and a full colour section with new miniatures. It even has BoB lists for the steppes, Nippon and the provinces, each allowing you to make those more historical lists you wanted...

(Brandir has provided us with a report of the UK WARMACHINE Tournament at Game 06 which took place on 29th April. However, due to circumtances beyond my control (honest) I haven't been able to post his article until now. Sorry - Wintermute) On Saturday 29 th April 2006 the largest (to date!) WARMACHINE tournament took place at Game 06 at the Thistle Birmingham City. Game 06 was organised jointly by the Stourbridge and October wargaming clubs and also hosted the Euro D&D Miniatures Championship and a major 24-player UK Flames of War tournament. I had the dubious privilege of being the head referee of the WARMACHINE tournament in my capacity as a Privateer Press Ganger.

[Many thanks to aaron for sending in this review of Army Builder 3 which was originally intended for Portent but was lost for a year down the back of someones sofa --Nick] I have to start this review with an apology. The apology is needed because this review is late. How late? Well, it was originally supposed to appear on Portent! Luckily, this has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It has given Army Builder 3 time to mature and time for the legion of dedicated data file writers time to release data files for all of the most popular wargames. Well, that is my excuse and I am sticking to it! For anyone not familiar with the previous versions, Army Builder is a PC-based alternative to the traditional pen-and-paper method for creating army lists for wargames. Army Builder takes all of the hard work out of army creation by working out all of the numbers for you and checking to make sure your army list is legal.

Salute 2006 Saturday 22nd April 2006 Organised by the South London Warlords, Salute is the largest show dedicated to miniature wargaming in the UK and probably Europe (except GW and their Games Day!) Some 5500 people attended the event at the London Excel. Before attending Salute, I had never been to the Excel. Having attended many trade shows at the NEC in Birmingham I was expecting something like that: nice carpeted floors with professional looking booths for all the traders and big open spaces for the demo games. But no, the hall they used had a rough dirty looking floor and reminded me of a massive sports hall that most wargaming shows are held in. I suppose that the organisers could have paid for swanky carpets and booths for the traders, but the cost was probably too much for a club-organised show.

The fear you always have with a new game from a reputable gaming company is how much have they messed with the old rules too make it fit the new game (any one remember WH40K when it first was released?). However, what surprised me about the new HORDES system from Privateer Press was what they had kept the same. The game system is the same as WARMACHINE, the same rules to hit and the same rules to wound; even the magic system is practically the same. They still manage to convey a sense of a different game, in that half a dozen or so small changes have altered the entire game dynamics.
